Hong Kong [1st July 2025 ] Dr Ma Jun, Chairman of Sprinkles Charity Foundation, has been awarded the prestigious Hong Kong Medal of Honour by the Chief Executive, Mr. John Lee, in recognition of his contributions in facilitating the formulation of green and sustainable finance policies, and the development of green and sustainable financing and investment in Hong Kong and beyond.
This esteemed accolade highlights Dr Ma’s unwavering commitment, dedication and impact in advocating for, and the development of, green and sustainable finance in Hong Kong SAR, mainland China and globally, in areas such as policy formation, platform building, product innovation and collaboration with the GBA and the international community.
“I’m delighted and deeply honoured to be receiving this award,” said Dr Ma, “Green finance in Hong Kong has grown rapidly since 2018. Hong Kong as an international green finance center, is not only a market for green and sustainable fund raising, but also a knowledge hub and convening place for global collaboration. HKGFA is proud to have played an important role in facilitating the development of the Hong Kong green finance market and its globally connectivity. There is still a huge amount of work to do and I look forward to continuing in our efforts to support Hong Kong SAR and mainland China’s decarbonization goals.”
The Hong Kong Medal of Honour is awarded to individuals in recognition of community service in a district or in a particular field over a long period of time. The presentation ceremony will take place later this year, when Dr Ma will be honoured alongside other distinguished individuals who have made significant contributions in their fields and in service to the community.
About Dr Ma Jun
Dr Ma has long been committed to the promotion of green finance and sustainable development, and has been widely influential both domestically and internationally. In China, Dr Ma serves as the Chairman of Green Finance Committee of China Society for Finance and Banking, the President of Institute of Finance and Sustainability, a member of the National Expert Committee on Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the PRC, and Special Advisor to the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development, and a member of the Advisory Committee of the Green Belt and Road Initiative Center (BRIGC).
In Hong Kong, Dr Ma is the Chairman and President of Hong Kong Green Finance Association, Chairman of Sprinkles Charity Foundation, President of the Green Development Institute, member of the Hong Kong Council for Carbon Neutrality and Sustainable Development, member of the Green Technology and Finance Development Committee, and a member of the Chief Executive’s Policy Unit Expert Group.
Internationally, Dr Ma served as Co-Chair of the G20 Sustainable Finance Working Group (G20 SFWG), Co-Chair of the Steering Committee of Green Investment Principles for the Belt and Road (GIP), Co-Chair of the International Platform for Sustainable Finance (IPSF) Taxonomy Working Group, and Chairman of Capacity-building Alliance of Sustainable Investment (CASI).
Over the past three decades, Dr Ma has served as a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the People’s Bank of China (PBoC), Chief Economist of the Research Bureau of the PBoC, Managing Director and Chief Economist of the Greater China Region of Deutsche Bank (Hong Kong), as well as in professional positions at the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), among others.
About Sprinkles (HK) Charity Foundation
Sprinkles (HK) Charity Foundation is a non-profit foundation initiated in Hong Kong by Dr. Ma Jun, Chairman and President of the Hong Kong Green Finance Association, alongside other dedicated philanthropists. The foundation commits itself to advancing research, promoting concepts, enhancing capabilities, and fostering international cooperation in the realms of green development, environmental protection, education, climate action, and biodiversity conservation.
Over the years, the foundation has consistently organized the “Spring Sunrise” Children’s Environmental Writing and Drawing Competition annually, attracting participation from more than 2,700 students in Hong Kong. Additionally, it supports a series of public forums and training events on sustainable education, green development, and green technology, in collaboration with UNESCO HKA and Hong Kong government agencies.
Since 2023, as the Secretariat for Capacity-building Alliance of Sustainable Investment (CASI), which comprises over 60 global member organizations, the foundation has spearheaded a series of green finance capacity-building activities for developing nations in Latin America, Hong Kong, Huzhou, the Middle East, Central Asia/West Asia, and Africa, benefiting over five thousands of participants.
The foundation dedicates resources to promote environmental knowledge in engaging ways to help both adults and children understand important environmental issues. It aims to nurture environmentally conscious youth who embrace the philosophy of achieving harmony between humanity and nature. In 2023, the foundation launched 3D Environmental Education Animation Project, with the goal of enabling Hong Kong’s youth to learn about the environment, understand how to protect it, and be educated and inspired to become active participants and future leaders in addressing climate change and environmental protection.
The Sprinkles (HK) Charity Foundation is recognized as a charitable organization exempt from tax under Article 88 of the Hong Kong Tax Ordinance.
